Acne is not just pimples. It can involve different types of blemishes including papules, whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, cysts and nodules. Blemishes may result in dark spots on the skin, scars, low self- esteem and even depression. Acne is the most common skin condition and up to 40 million people suffer from it at one time. Most acne appears in the teenager young adult population but it can occur in men, women, babies and older. Acne is caused by the clogging of pores with dead skin. When the skin produces a lot of sebum and the dead cells stick together they become trapped. The bacteria living on our skin called P. acne can multiply in this environment and result in red swollen and even cystic or nodular. Acne is graded according to the severity. Many people with mild acne are often able to treat their skin with over the counter products containing benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid and require 4 to 8 weeks to see improvement. Despite claims, acne products do not produce results overnight. The more advanced acne with cysts or nodules usually requires antibiotics, birth control pills, isotretinoin, laser or light therapies, chemical peels or drainage and extraction depending on the type of acne. It can take a considerable amount of time for acne to clear and this can be very frustrating, however without treatment one might face permanent scars, low self-esteem and anxiety. Once skin is clear, treatment should continue in order to prevent breakouts.
